On today’s standard controller layout, it’s easy to use both D-Pad and left Joystick without a third grip. I don’t see how that wouldn’t have been possible in 1996?

Technology@lemmy.world•Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next monthEnglish
3·2 days agoOur (privatized) mail service offers an identification process to third parties where you either walk into a post office with your physical ID card or you make a video call with a call center and show it to them. I don’t think they transmit any more data than “over 18 yes/no”. So while data hording might often be the reason, I don’t think it’s the only one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2·2 days agoYeah that was the language barrier speaking. ID of course. You know you can get a new card at your local Einwohnermeldeamt (for a fee)?

95·2 days agoThe German
passportID card (and I’m sure many others) has a NFC chip in it and you can use it with an open source app to securely prove your identity online. In cases like this, the only information pulled from your ID would be “over 18” or “not over 18”.It’s one of the few things my government did right in the digital space. And yet almost nobody in the private sector uses this. I’m tired of being asked to upload a photo of my ID for age verification.
If you plan to reduce your meat intake, you don’t have to consider anything, really.
If you plan to eat fully vegan, you should look up B12 supplements and make sure to get some proteins (beans, lentils, tofu etc). The whole nutrition thing is not as big a problem as you think it is, though. If you’re unsure, maybe get a blood test done after a few months.

6·6 days agoWhen KDE Plasma 6 was released and the feature was introduced, there were bug reports that it just keeps growing indefinitely. And the dev who implemented it was like “yeah, I know. I thought that would be fun”
How do they list Nextcloud as an alternative to Google Drive but not to the Google office apps? LibreOffice is not really a substitute, Nextcloud Office/Collabora is.

Technology@lemmy.world•The TV industry finally concedes that the future may not be in 8KEnglish
13·11 days agoYes I do. I want an actual smart TV with a practical, open source, TV-optimitzed Linux OS. It’s not that software on a TV is a bad idea in itself. It’s how it’s ruined by for-profit companies.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The main reason not to drive in the snow is the way other people drive in the snow.
31·14 days agoI’d much prefer if the majority of people was driving too careful. Being 5 minutes late is not a problem. Speeding is.
Abaurd laws aside, why is a third party involved? In my country we have a digital ID card with an open source governmental app that tells you exactly what data is given out to a service. Which in this example would only be “over 18 years yes/no”

“Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I’m one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it’s true! — but when you’re a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are — nuclear is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what’s going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what’s going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it’s four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it’s all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don’t, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.”

Fun fact: Einwohnermeldeamt is the shortest German word beside “Ja”, “Nein” and “Wadenbeinfraktur”
