News@lemmy.world•Gen Z is the first generation dumber than their parents, neuroscientist claimsEnglish
10·1 day agoAt the end of middle school, I got a participation trophy for the state science fair, which was a mandatory requirement for graduating 8th grade. It was the only “award” I got at the graduation superlatives assembly.
The kicker? I actually got an exception for the science fair because I missed 6 weeks of school while almost dying from MRSA pneumonia. This is my millennial villain origin story.

4·1 day agoI basically stopped playing online games entirely once voice chat became the norm, and then a full on expectation/requirement. I absolutely hate it.

2·1 day agoI barely even used a laptop at all until college, and it took me a solid two years to realize that having a laptop in class was too distracting. I switched exclusively to hand written notes and my GPA went from barely holding onto a 3.0 to nearly straight As. By grad school I was competing for top 5 class rank in a top 10 engineering program. It’s fucking nuts how much of a difference writing shit down by hand made in terms of my ability to retain information on first exposure.
The biggest point is that all the supernatural stuff is either outright debunked or left slightly ambiguous which really supports the whole “I want to believe” vibe throughout the entire run.
That is, until the final episodes where they invent, and explicitly demonstrate, some idiotic bubble universe for abused children, which might be the dumbest way the show could have possibly ended.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it really dangerous to fall sleep in the bath?English
59·2 days agoThis thread is wild simply because I don’t know any adult humans who actually take baths, and I have honestly always assumed the reason they exist at all is for washing small children.

24·2 days agoI’ve been using my cheap $5 electric candle lighter for like 5 years now. It’s saved probably 10 butane candle lighters from the trash.

Fuck NBC for running ICE ads. Turned it off right there and I’d encourage anyone who isn’t a piece of shit to do the same.
Basically commercial grade equipment. A $10k oven/range which is designed to work 15 hours per day non-stop in a restaurant will last forever in your home. All the commercial manufacturers make “consumer sized” versions of their restaurant stuff for high end home kitchens.
You can buy appliances which will last that long, but they cost a lot of money. The reality isn’t that people forgot how to make things durable, it’s that consumer demand is so conditioned by price, most people “prefer” to spend less on appliances they will replace more often.
The average appliance these days is actually significantly cheaper when adjusted for inflation compared to the 60s and 70s.

Um ackshually you cannot own property in China, You merely lease it from the communist party for 70 years.
Even a switch mode power supply doesn’t really flicker since they have a rectification and smoothing stage on the output to produce a DC voltage. The switching is done on the input to set the duty cycle which controls the voltage/current ratio at the output.

I am definitely not a rule follower by default in the sense that I identify that many rules are just a framework for compelling obedience and preserving power hierarchies. But then shit like speeding and running red lights or driving recklessly makes me furious, because these rules are not tools for subjugation or oppression in any way, they are protocols for safe coexistence which sometimes create extremely fucking minor inconveniences.
I honestly believe people who drive aggressively are just impotently asserting agency in a world they feel beat down by, because they have literally nothing going on. It’s one of the most pathetic behaviors commonly present in the modern world.
