We have the expression (well in English for those unaware of it) of a stopped clock being right twice a day for a reason. Guess that expression is probably going to the wayside these days though. Even the worst people make an agreeable point now and then afterall.

LeopardsAteMyFace@lemmy.ca•“I always loved Trump, this is unfair”: Republican mayor can’t believe he’s facing deportation after 50 years in US
5·2 days agoHah Trump throws anyone ‘close’ to him under the bus for $1, how can these people not see it clearly? Unless you’re actively gargling his marbles you go under the bus, if you are he may wait until you’re done then discard you.
People are nothing to him if they aren’t giving him money or power. Really rabdom people probably don’t register like a person would to you or me, most people are just objects that he deals with to get more money. If you aren’t giving him money then you don’t get to be acknowledged. Till you’re famous and say something bad then that sets off his safe space security alarm, hah like that South Park episode.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•TV remotes should have an easy-to-find (by touch) "volume toggle" button that toggles between two volume settings.
4·3 days agoI’ve had that thought for decades, like they do (or used to) do a button to switch between the last channel. So you’d go to each channel and flip at a commercial. Then forget to switch back so you saw two half episodes but that’s not really an issue with a volume setting.

Television@piefed.social•Turning Point USA’s Halftime Show Was Exactly What You’d Expect
2·4 days agoHe saw it enough of the main one to complain about it anyways, he seems like the sort to watch something only to have something to say to bitch about it after. What a petulant child that guy is. He didn’t like the idea of the original, they made another one for people who live in America but don’t like Americans or something (yes I know it’s a racist thing), then he watches the regular one to complain. Like seriously this is your great leader? For those that voted with or abstained cause if you didn’t vote this is who you asked for, aside from other issues that caused no voting which is an issue in itself in the US. Apparently it’s all good cause soon voting will be as important as the score on Who’s Line Is It Anyways like in Russia.

2 North American 4 You@sh.itjust.works•It's almost like they're trying to respect each other's differences ffsEnglish
1·5 days agoThats pretty much the answer I got from my French teacher one time, as a difference not that either isn’t the real language I mean. Though she wasn’t Quebecois or French as far as I know and it was a secluded school so was never sure if correct. All I know is I got up into first year university French course (may have been grade 12 equivalent) and could never understand anyone speaking French at random parties I went to…which would mostly be Quebecois… being Canadian and all. Mostly the talking speed it seems like all the words were spoken like cursive is written, everything melded together.
Mean as much as I hate how Americans spell words lazily (kill the u in ou words, spell grey wrong and make me get the wheel of fortune pc game wrong in the 80s, vana white was not well done) still their version of English.

2·5 days agoJust those types who find anything to complain about, and well if this is accurate really anything to complain about.
Like it should be icey and frozen out there it’s Feburary. To be fair I’m from Canada but noticed even our area has less cold snaps and snow than it used to. Regardless I’m pretty sure the evil human isn’t personally making the local weather system worse. Well unless it’s Cobra with the weather dominator (dunno if that’s a thing I just watch a lot of Robot Chicken).

News@lemmy.world•NSA detected phone call between foreign intelligence and a person close to Trump
4·6 days agoMean this term is worse but if that was possible it would have happened before the end of the first one I assume, the world watched Trump looking like he was Putin’s dog at … Well whatever conference that was. Assume it was a bad employee review. Now this administration has axed everyone that has so much as a raised eyebrow to their actions and doesn’t want to gargle that baby carrot.
In the end I don’t think there’s any saving except by the American citizens in some action. Least before it gets much worse on a world stage. Beyond alienating allies and doing his tariff quick attack which seems to be the standard ‘attack other countries that include nato when they don’t say yes’.
Kind of like an abuser would do huh…and Trump has only been named 38k times in the released Epstein files from pages that aren’t completely blacked out? I’m sure it’s just a coincidence…the sound of your tub draining is the same one American democracy is doing as it’s sucked into his bank account.
Good info to know, we always had the wood pile away when my dad did it but I hadn’t thought of that. Course when I was young we were in northern BC so probably not an issue there since it was a winter thing. No burning in my current place but good knowledge if I ever get a fireplace, since I’m in somewhat warmer areas now. Probably shouldn’t chop any myself give my coordination either.

news@lemmings.world•Trump says he will revoke church tax exempt status if leaders 'say something bad about' himEnglish
2·7 days agoHow many of his supporters would have a minister (or whichever title) saying bad things about him though? Though guess Catholics probably vote Republican for the abortion stance and the Pope hasn’t been kind to ‘the Cheeto’s’ actions. I guess I answered for myself but leaving the comment.
In the end I imagine it’s fewer than I’d like to hope. Just chisel at the sides of support until you have the fanatics and the rest wonder why their faces were eaten by leopards. Again the bit ‘first they came for the…’. We are all a ‘they’ unless you’re as fanatical as them, no matter how close your ideals may be.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I had emergency surgery and as a result it looks like I will be zonked out on oxys for the next week. Never had these, what are some good movies to watch in this condition?
5·8 days agoI won’t say it’s always my thing but sometimes a plain action movie with few cheesy lines is all you’re looking for. Definitely saw enough Chuck Norris in the 80s to confirm that.

3·8 days agoSeems odd they’d both end up in the same crappy movie together in that year. May not be remembering movie years well but Urban was least in Star Trek and Bettany in Marvel even if only as a voice but assume the plan was to make him Vision from the start.
Was it entertaining at least? It sounds like it could be a fun watch, in theory…like the synopsis of Red Letter Media’s Best of the Worst movies probably do.

news@lemmings.world•DOJ Claims That Trump’s $400 Million Ballroom Is Necessary For National SecurityEnglish
1·10 days agoOkay just from comments I’ve learned (so possibly incorrect, quick Google said it was there) is that Hitler did the same thing for his personal bunker. Like building a ballroom and making a bunker underneath.
How many red flags is the US population going to tolerate this? Yes I know health plan and job security arguments, but their country is going to hell in a hand basket.
Imagine a society that didn’t allow the rich stealing, made sure people had enough and could thrive without worrying about being destitute? If only …from Canada here though our social net is okay, but not as good as it could be.
That was pretty much my thoughts on reading it. Then I realized, that sort of described the plenty of fish site, unsure if still around, went on a few dates from that (guess that shows my range and age) and had fun. Well more fun than not.
Talk about feeling old I played almost all the games until 2006, but fewer of the list after and hardly from the 2016 one. Not trying to one up but figured good place to comment.
It’s been a fun time seeing progression over the years, haven’t stopped playing since my first Gemini (Atari 2600 knockoff that played the same games) system. Going from 2d squares to a proper video representation has been awesome. I always enjoyed the graphic improvements the gameplay has had its ups and downs but the remembered ones did that part right.

News@lemmy.world•Epstein and Palantir boss discussed plans to destabilise the Middle East
61·10 days agoWhich is why billionaires should not exist. When you got enough money your toys are people’s lives while you have fun trying to shape socities cause that’s what you want.
We got enough issues before they all decided to play with their toys. I’d say no one on a planet scale should have as much influence as these people do for a functioning society.
Okay maybe when we have Dune level of planets (tens of thousands) in our realm…but not when we got one planet where some dipshit can destroy half the world by making a decision. Oh didn’t mean the other obvious one this time but yeah still agree. He’s only rich off a good bubble (co-founded paypal and invested in Facebook early) and probably off of other people’s suffering. He got lucky with money and now has power to control how things work in many societies. I say societies cause I assume he has influence over other countries in some way.

Being Canadian I was so wondering at prices in the states (from tv, movies) during the early 90s. You’d see a greasy spoon diner have breakfast for like $3.50 in them, usually closer to $6-7 up here for the same (noticbly more after exchange rate). The crappy fast food milkshakes were like $4 minimum let alone a theme restraunt with Steve Buscemi as a waiter.
Though I do often use the inflation calculation when I see a price from the 90s and earlier these days just to make sure I got the right perspective on cost.
