Matrix@lemmy.ml•Welcoming Discord users amidst the challenge of Age VerificationEnglish
2·2 hours agoI didnt use video calling all that much, although I did try it out. It worked but I didnt see a difference one way or another self hosting that.
Federation was the real killer. Once I got hooked up to the main matrix server, it spiked like crazy. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes! Who knows a lot can happen in 6-8 months!

4·3 hours agoCPU is actually a pretty big bottleneck for matrix. I ran a server for about 1/2 the year and it used quite a bit more CPU that I initially thought. And it was a single user instance of all things. I used a docker and then later on yunohost. Both times cpu would spike quite often.

When its up peertube.wtf is great for discovering peertube videos. I use it to find things to post on !peertube@lemmy.world
I like to spend my time on piefed. Its my favorite “threadiverse” software atm. I spent snd contributed code to lemmy for about a year but jumped over to piefed. Its fun and fedi interop was better at the time.
For everything else fediverse.party for fun software and instances!

4·21 hours agoLol they will just remove ai and call it win 12. Coworkers of mine were joking the best windows will be the linux kernel with windows on top. Inverse wsl.

39·19 hours agoTheir stock seems to be doing a bit of a freefall lately:

Its still pretty high compared to just 5 years ago. But investors look to leverage future positions. So its interesting its going down at such a quick rate.
Any good retro handheld matrix (or other communities)?
Hes done some good gaming bits too.

6·2 days agoI mean you can …but its gonna be slop.
I remember some crazy stuff back when I had to work with a Java + ember.js project. Everything was like that.
Thats kind of you to say 😀
Cool, good to know someone else has the same experience.
Ive been on a couple of multi-year projects and they are NOT fun with OOP + developer went crazy with patterns they were experimenting at the time. Its what made the “rule” pop up to begin with.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some discord alternatives that we can suggest to our friends?English
23·2 days agoFrom what im seeing matrix and stoat. And both have their issues. But this feels kinda like the reddit api moment.
Its the best/worst thing about OOP no matter what language.
We had a rule at work that if you are 3 levels or more down an inheritance tree, then you are too far. The cognitive load is just too much, plus everything stops making sense.
One level can be great (MVC all have great conventions, MCP as well). Two can be pushing it (Strategy pattern when you have physical devices and cant be connected all the time, Certain kinds of business logic that repeat hundreds of times, etc…) But even there you are kinda pushing it.
I need code that I can look at a month from now and know WTF is happening. And sometimes its better to have less DRY and more comprehension. Or maybe im just a forever mediocre dev and dont see the “light”. I dunno.
I think its ok to discuss the merits of all fedi services. But unlike most platforms, one service doing well does not mean others will do porely. We are in this together.
As soon as it gets personal, thats when i think a timeout needs to happen.
