If your brain was fully developed before screens came into existence, the screens couldn’t undo the learning you already had. However if you have spent your entire life viewing a screen and never learned to read, write, converse, dress yourself, etc and get to adulthood that way, your brain no longer has enough ability to fully erase that accumulated learning deficit. Many people under the age of 20 have large accumulated learning deficits. Unless babies, toddlers and young children are restricted from using them, the overall intelligence of the population will continue to decline. Apparently humans, in general, are very bad at learning from history. Through my life it was often asked how could Germans have allowed the Nazis to take over. We are seeing it in real time in the US. We also wondered how apparently advanced civilizations crumbled and their knowledge was lost. Again we are seeing in real time how that happens.

I grew up in a strict Christian family. I would bet that every single one of the kids forced to watch the Kid Rock special watched Bad Bunny once they were away from their parents. Buy cheap basics: dried beans & lentils, rice, potatoes, pasta & whatever veg is cheapest - frozen if fresh is too expensive. Use onions, garlic, salsa and spices to make it tasty. Falafels are easy and cheap to make. Dal is also good. Farmers/Shepard’s Pie (can use veggie ground round for cheaper and vegetarian). Having a prep day is good to make chili or veg stew or other casseroles that can be portioned out over the week. Making more portions at once is cheaper over time. Oatmeal with cinnamon and a tiny bit of (real) maple syrup is a healthy go to breakfast.

I’m thinking about going back to a paper map. Has anyone else had a problem with Google Maps suddenly making insane routing decisions? There are a couple routes I travel often and I check before I leave, mainly for traffic conditions, but have found in the last couple months that Google suggests a completely insane route instead when there isn’t anything to detour around or avoid. It’s almost like routing is now an AI hallucination.

50+ years? I have yet to see one last more than about 10 before needing to be replaced or fixed. Most often just shut off and go back to traditional heating. Our new-to-us home is about 25 years old and the previous owner said most of the in floor heating was already shot when they bought it 12 years ago.

Time to plan to have 50 or 100 people at every polling station in every blue & red state. There should be enough retirees, unemployed, house-parents, teens to make it happen. 1 Million average Americans of every political affiliation to defend their democracy for a day.

I was going to say, I would count on anyone under 40yo to be able to do anything IT but they are the rulers of social media and gaming so long as it is all plugged in and ready to play. I don’t know what will happen when the last of Gen X retire.

We also ended up with climate change, obesity, vastly increased cancer rates. Some of the great things of the past had long term bad consequences even if they seemed perfect in the beginning. Add to it that since Reagan, the average person stopped gaining any share of the wealth created with any progress.
