Peter Mandelson was an influential politician in Balir’s New Labour and kind of just never left, playing a part in McSweeney and co’s purging of the left from the party after Corbyn resigned and Starmer got elected. As part of this, they stuffed the higher levels of the party with loyalists to Starmer and gave Mandelson the ambassadorial role to America, despite his established connections to Epstein (Jim Pickard at the FT has been loud about this for years). Mandelson is now in trouble because the recent batch of Epstein files have revealed he’d been selling state secrets to Epstein and everyone close to Mandelson is also getting swept up in it, Streeting included.
