They successfully liberated themselves from France, but unfortunately they still ended up in a civil war and their government became pretty authoritarian, made up of an unelected elite. Well, my favorite way of absorbing history is through BD, and I see there are some good-looking titles about Algérie. [Example1], [Example2 (2 tomes)] So I’m ordering these, and hopefully can review them soon over at EGN.Anyway, wow, I had a good mate back in college from Algeria, and I’d never have known that the strife lasted well beyond the 50’s. He just didn’t speak of it, even casually. I’d thought that the country was relatively democratic all these years, so it’s something of a shock to hear what you say…
I also seem to recall that there was huge furor in France about the loss of Algérie, with various politicians and others being sort of thrown under the bus about all that, IIRC.
