Ireland’s Charlie McGettigan, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, said he will return his trophy in protest of Israel’s continued participation in the competition, joining Swiss singer Nemo, last year’s champion, in the symbolic move.
McGettigan said he plans to send the trophy to the European Broadcasting Union, which organizes Eurovision, in a video posted on social media. McGettigan won the contest with fellow Irish singer Paul Harrington.
He said Nemo had contacted him online to explain the decision to return the 2024 trophy.
“They came across as sincere and a very intelligent person and stated their case very well, and therefore in support of Nemo, I would like to return my trophy to the EBU as well," said Harrington. “Unfortunately, our win was in 1994 and I can’t lay my hands on whatever trophy we received back then, but if I do find it, I will return my trophy as well.”
Nemo is the most unworthy winner of this century. McGettigan is trying to get some streams of people curious to remember what he sang at the time. These actions are about themselves, not Gaza. No one in Gaza cares about the Eurovision, they have bigger problems in hand…
All this Eurovision debate is a great distraction from the real issues at play there. But keep the circus guys, it’s working wonderfully… /s
No wonder Israel insists on participating, all this free distractions are priceless. And the only risk is the implosion of a music contest. Obviously no one suggested boycotting the world cup for instance… That’s not a boycott people are willing to do.
Who cares if it’s good PR to fight Israel then I’m all the more for people doing it.
It’s not just PR, it’s also plain stupid to “fight Israel” on a song contest. Last year Israel almost won thanks to that fight. And like I explained before, it’s a fantastic distraction from the real issues in Gaza. If this “fight” goes on the only thing that might happen is the end of Eurovision, not of the problems in Gaza. So there’s that.
Okay I didn’t realize you were trolling bye
The real trolls are the ones who think Eurovision is a priority for Gaza.
