  • One of my good friends about a decade ago had this very argument.

The right swore to everyone that hospitals can’t turn you away, they have to treat you and if you can’t pay for it they’ll let you out of it.

I was working healthcare adjecent at the time, I’m telling him Fuck now, that’s not how this works. It is a possible outcome.

If you walkin homeless, they might get you to the point where you’re stable and set you free, but as soon as you have a kid there and you have to give them an ID and a name, your chances of being fucked go up 10x

  • Ok, honestly with some caveats, this might have legs.

What most of us want: to use our services anonymously and privately

What some of us want: to keep youtube/discord/roblox from enabling pedofarms. yes i get the obligatory people should just raise their kids

What companies say they want: to keep kids safe

What companies really want: to appease some users and farm as much data about someone as they can and to comply with the growing trend of places that require age verification.

So, what if they provide an offline model for age verification? download the model, phone in airplane mode. verify yourself, get a digitally signed certificate, expunge the app so shove that verifiable signature as proof that you’re an adult.

From the corporate standpoint, It’s no different than signing into their account and giving them your face. we keep our privacy, they can fuck off about it.

  • For sure, a company could do that. Waste and shrink are problems that growing companies universally experience at some point. When they expand to the point where they have departments dedicated to reducing those losses, they end up with varying levels of strict policies to combat it.

My current company is a few hundred, which is a child company of many thousands. In my companies initial incarnation, before my time, they issued work credit cards to people to deal with software subscriptions and hardware needs. They ran a skeleton IT staff who just knitted everything together that people bought.

    until;

People start buying their groceries on the cards. It was ‘snacks’. Before long it was out of fucking control and they had to pull everyone’s cards and slap the hands of even some of the management.

By the time I got there, I had to be read the riot act to get a card with enough space to provision basic equipment.

Our parent company takes weeks, requires seperate accounts and PO’s for any transactions what-so-ever, I’m not sure what they faced, but I suspect it’s kind of like those youtube videos where you see the guy throw the basketball overhead backward and full court and it goes in and everyone in frame absolutely loses their mind, you have to assume they had been at it for hours for the reaction to be that insane.

  • Heh, I used to sell computers. If you spent 5 minutes with them explaining Mhz, MB, GB, in terms they could understand and how to go to each tag and understand where they stood in the lineup, I wasn’t on commission, I told them they could go anywhere and take those numbers and compare prices and make an informed decision apples to apples, they almost all immediately bought.

We did NOT generally have the best price, but would price match. They wouldn’t even look elsewhere. You know what you’re talking about, we’re sticking with YOU!

That one does 120 million things a second, this one is the newer chips, it bascially does two things at a time, so they’re both 120 but this one gets 240 million things done. This is the hard drive, it’s your file cabinet, this is the ram it’s your desktop. The file cabinets are huge, but you can only get a couple things out at a time if you don’t have enough desktop space. All these systems have 3 basic options, low, medium, high. Buy medium. It’ll last another year or two longer than low and the price isn’t that much more. If money is no concern, buy high, it’ll last the longest.

They all just made a quick decision and got the hell out.
